Day 01
01Centro / Culture
Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião
Begin here. The modern cathedral replaces the expected church silhouette with a vast concrete cone. Inside, tall stained-glass panels draw the eye upward; outside, its sculptural shape makes a striking contrast with Centro’s older architecture.
02Lapa / Culture
Arcos da Lapa
Continue to this stop. Two tiers of white arches cross Lapa where an eighteenth-century aqueduct once carried water into the city. The structure later became a tram viaduct: a useful place to read the relationship between downtown Rio and the hillside above.
03Lapa / Culture
Escadaria Selarón
Continue to this stop. Jorge Selarón transformed this staircase between Lapa and Santa Teresa into a patchwork of tiles. Look closely at the changing motifs as you climb rather than treating the steps only as a backdrop for a quick photograph.
